In a new Empire magazine interview–via Variety–Avatar producer Jon Landau shared some brand-new details for the next three films in James Cameron’s Avatar universe. It’s already been confirmed by Cameron that Avatar 3 will feature another race of Na’vi, but Landau expanded on this and confirmed the group will be named the Ash People and are described as “an aggressive, volcanic race.”
Landau also revealed that Oona Chaplin, who played Talisa Maegyr in Game of Thrones, will be playing the leader of the Ash People, Varang.
“There are good humans and there are bad humans,” Landau said. “It’s the same thing on the Na’vi side. Oftentimes, people don’t see themselves as bad. What is the root cause of how they evolve into what we perceive as bad? Maybe there are other factors there that we aren’t aware of.”
The producer went on to share some first details on Avatar 4, which will have “a big time jump” which leads into Avatar 5, where it will be partially set on Earth. Landau revealed what this iteration of Earth will be like, saying that “there’s over-population and a depletion of our natural resources that make life harder.”
“But we don’t want to paint a bleak picture for where our world is going. The films are also about the idea that we can change course,” he said.
After seven weeks of sitting at the top of the box office–and No.4 all-time–Avatar 2: The Way of Water is expected to fall to No. 2 for the first time this weekend.
